Photographer focuses his lens on Monterey County's beauty
Chuck Fazio is a drone pilot, professional photographer, and scuba diver who is taking on one big task: Capturing the essence of Monterey County in 96 hours by air, land, and sea.“I’ve got 96 hours to travel around the entirety of the county to capture its essence, because a couple of days after that, 96 hours is up,” Fazio said. The project was organized by the Monterey County Convention and Visitors Bureau and The Arts Council for Monterey County.Fazio is taking five students along for the ride as he captures breathtaking images for three days.California State University Monterey Bay senior Ayana Hawk said anyone can pull out their phone and snap a picture, but she’s hoping that by watching Fazio, she’ll get a better idea of the more technical aspects of photography.“What I want to take away from this is capturing beauty,” Hawk said.Fazio is known for his nature photography and is an artist in residency for the conservation organization American Forests. He said he is excited about the teaching aspect of this challenge."That adds another layer. Not only do I have the responsibility of getting exhibition-quality art, but I'm being tailed by five students, and having to teach them at the same time," Fazio said.A key ingredient to Fazio's creativity: Don't prepare."I did very little planning because I don't want to look at any pictures of this area that other photographers have done. I didn't Google anything. I like to take it fresh. So I am going to get in my huge RV. And we're going start driving around, and when I see a picture, we slam on the brakes and I get out and take it." Fazio said. "One photographer, three unique perspectives and 96 hours. It’s fun, a little scary. I think I'm up to the challenge."The exhibit, named "96 Hours Over Monterey," will debut Thursday night to a VIP audience at Wave Street Studios in Monterey. On Friday and Saturday, it will be open to the public from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Most of the pieces will be available for purchase.
