MIAMI — The pilot of a small plane that crashed in South Florida on Monday was found dead beneath the wreckage of the aircraft.

Authorities say the plane and pilot were reported missing at 12:19 a.m. The pilot's name was not released. The aircraft was described as a RV-7 experimental airplane. There were no passengers aboard.

The Broward County Sheriff's Office said in a statement that the plane was spotted in a "swampland" outside Coral Springs.

Rescue crews spent hours trying to get to the isolated area using helicopters and airboats to locate the plane. They did not reach the site until about noon Monday, more than 12 hours after the plane and pilot were reported missing to authorities.
