Gears of War 4 is still a couple of weeks away but players on Xbox One can already begin pre-loading the game in preparation for the big day.

A tweet from the Gears of War Twitter account announced that the 54.6GB download is now live.

For players with a standard 500GB Xbox One, the game will occupy over one tenth of their hard disk space. PC players have it even worse: the game size is an eye-watering 80GB for Windows, one of the largest games we've seen on any platform.

This doesn't mean that GoW4 is guaranteed to be any bigger or prettier than its smaller counterparts, it could just be poorly optimised.

Those who own an Xbox One and PC will be able to move seamlessly between both platforms in Gears of War 4 if it is purchased from the Xbox Store. The game is one of the first titles to participate in the Xbox Play Anywhere initiative, which grants customers a version of the game on both platforms. Saves and game data are shared between the two.

Gears of War 4 arrives on October 11 and in deference to a long history of releasing trailers accompanied by emotional indie rock, The Coalition has delivered exactly the same goods once again.

The Digital Spy verdict will be hacking its way through viscera to your screens shortly.
