Mining machine manufacturer MMD Mineral Sizing emphasised the importance of sustainable mining when it showcased its mining equipment at MINExpo International 2016, which was held in Las Vegas, in the US, this month.

The company notes that mining is changing rapidly globally with rising costs, environmental pressures and health and safety having a huge bearing on the viability of traditional truck and shovel methods. The industry is becoming increasingly aware of the need for more sustainable mining methods and of the ecological benefits derived from eliminating dust and reducing harmful greenhouse-gas emissions caused by truck and shovel methods. MMD maintains that its technology is at the forefront of this revolution.

MMD’s display at MINExpo included both the 500 and 1 150 series of the company’s patented MMD twin shaft mineral sizers, which have the ability to process both wet sticky material and hard dry rock, or a combination of both, through the same machine. The sizers feature an array of changeable tooth profiles and options to efficiently deliver the product size and throughput required. The breaking action of the sizers processes material quickly and efficiently, resulting in high production capacities and compact machines. The sizers, moreover, control product size in all three dimensions while reducing the generation of dust and fine material.

Shock protection is incorporated in the design, preventing the machine from sustaining damage by steel or other unbreakable material. The sizers require little support infrastructure, providing high installation flexibility in fixed, semimobile or mobile units, whether mounted on a new installation or retrofitted onto an existing one. The deep scroll action of the machine also provides it with the ability to automatically reject oversized material.

The sizers are designed to deliver simple operation and maintenance to promote a safe working environment. The machines can also be remotely controlled and monitored and are fully automated to ensure continuous optimal performance.

Attendees of the event were able to learn more about the sizers’ unique three-stage breaking action and patented scroll formation, as well as the latest advances in in-pit sizing and conveying (IPSC) technology. These features are also all manageable through the MMD interactive iPad application.

MMD’s heavy-duty D4 apron plate feeder was also on display and is designed to provide a regulated feed of material into the sizing plant. MMD feeders are, moreover, engineered to handle the undefined impact forces from direct loading, with apron plates designed to reduce fines and spillage.

MMD also screened the latest aerial footage of its fully mobile sizer, which can process 9 000 t/h of overburden, with peaks of 14 000 t/h demonstrated. The sizer was first introduced in 2013 and the company says it has since generated significant waves in the industry.

The fully mobile sizer enables the use of efficient conveyor haulage directly from the mine face, enhancing the economic, environmental and safety advantages of installing an IPSC system. The sizer is able to move freely to work directly with the excavator while sizing and delivering conveyable material onto the conveyor haulage system. This eliminates the need for trucks and, as a result, their associated costs, safety risks and environmental impact.

MMD’s mobile units can also be configured for a range of transport options to suit the duties and throughput required by the end-user. The units are reliable and robust, have a throughput capacity of over 10 000 t/h, are automated, have a low environmental impact owing to the use of electrical power, are able to operate in extreme weather conditions and are easy to maintain, elaborates the company.
