Snooker world champion Steve Davis cued up a night to remember for Chorlton’s hipsters - playing techno, dance and soul music in his new career as a DJ.

The self-styled Snooker Star DJ went down a storm with his set at cool Chorlton bar Electrik, with crowds packing in to see him spin his favourite tracks.

That included a diverse mix of music, from techno to northern soul and a bit of melodic drone and even krautrock thrown in for good measure.

Six-time world snooker champion Steve, 59, has had a lifelong passion for music, and has DJed at his local radio station in Essex for years, but has only recently started heading out on the circuit to perform live.

He fulfilled a lifelong dream performing at Glastonbury in the summer, and by all accounts he went down a storm at the Wilbraham Road bar - with one reveller hailing it the “best night he’d ever had in Chorlton”. Praise indeed!

Electrik boss Chris Massey said staff had discussed the possibility of Steve DJing there for some time - as in music circles he is known for hi impressive collection of soul records.

Chris said: “Knowing what an in depth knowledge he had of music we thought he would be perfect for our 1 Deck Wednesday’s where the policy is “anything goes” and to “expect the unexpected”

“DJs are invited to come and play off 1 record deck and drop whatever they like. Previous special guests have included Andrew Weatherall, Don Letts, Mr Scruff, Ashley Beedle and Juan Maclean so it seemed a logical idea to include Steve onto that roster too!

“Musically it was a really ‘interesting’ journey through some real obscure and off reservation music choices.

“From The Beatles’s ”Tomorrow Never Knows” to “Hassan” by Hawkwind alongside some pounding techno, melodic drone type tracks to a bit of soul and krautorck and beyond, it’s clear that he does have a really cool record collection and a heavy interest in music.”

Most importantly of all though, Steve was a top guy too.

Chris added: “He was a really cool guy too and totally down to earth, happy to chat and mingle with everyone too… a thoroughly nice guy!”

If you missed Steve’s star turn in Chorlton, don’t worry - as it has just been announced he will play his next DJ set at Gorilla bar in Manchester city centre on November 24.
