Church to offer ‘Second to None’ bazaar and quilt show

Event to take place Saturday at Second Presbyterian Church

Second Presbyterian Church, 210 N.W. Menninger Road, will have its annual “Second to None” bazaar and quilt show from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 19.

The event will feature a general store with vintage and gift items; a bake sale, with cookies sold by the pound; coffee and rolls at 9 a.m.; and lunch with homemade soup and ice cream at 11 a.m.

Pictures with Santa will be available from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., with photos taken outside in Santa’s sleigh from 1 to 2 p.m.

Additionally, a drawing will be held for a chance to win an “Amish with a Twist” quilt.

n Mother Teresa Catholic Church, 2014 N.W. 46th, will have its annual fall craft and bake sale from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 19. Homemade cinnamon rolls and soup will be available for purchase.

n Oakland United Methodist Church, 801 N.E. Chester, will have a craft fair and bake sale from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 19. Lunch will be available, with chili dogs or hot dogs $1 each and chips or cookies for 50 cents. Crafters can reserve 6-foot tables for $20 each. n Faith Temple Church, 1162 S.W. Lincoln, will have a CD release party featuring special guests Bro. R.H., DJ Sheep, Quindarious Johnson, Janel Johnson, Bro. Too Short, Urban Ensemble, and others at 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 19, at the church.

n The Topeka Reformed Presbyterian Church, S.W. 33rd and Auburn Road, will celebrate 20 years in its present building with an evening of singing God’s praises from the 150 Psalms of the Bible at 5:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 20. The congregation moved to this location in the fall of 1996. However, its roots in Topeka go back to 1888 with former locations on Clay Street and S.W. Fairlawn Road. Refreshments will be served following the singing.

— A free food distribution will take place starting at 9 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 22, at Family of God Church, 1231 N.W. Eugene. The event is sponsored by Randel Ministries Inc., in partnership with Harvesters and Family of God Church.

— The congregations of First Lutheran, Trinity Lutheran, St. David’s Episcopal and Our Savior’s Lutheran churches will join for a Thanksgiving-eve worship service at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 23, at Our Savior’s Lutheran, 2021 S.W. 29th. A choir made up of the members of all four congregations will provide special music. A reception will follow.

— Kjarstyn “KJ” Davis, 16, daughter of Corey and Liz Davis, received the Young Womanhood Recognition Award during the Nov. 13 sacrament service of the Sherwood Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 2401 S.W. Kingsrow Road.

The recognition is the highest award given to LDS girls ages 12 to 18. It is given on the basis of high moral character and the completion of a program of spiritual and secular goal-setting; service; and personal development projects.

Her projects included working one summer in the kitchen of the Falley Scout Reservation in Jefferson County; developing her singing talents; embroidering squares for a quilt; and reading and studying the entire Book of Mormon: Another Testament of Jesus Christ.

Davis is a member of the LDS Sherwood Ward and a junior at Washburn Rural High School. She also participates in seminary, the LDS Church’s before-school scripture study program for high school students.

— Faith Temple Church, 1162 S.W. Lincoln, will have a God Squad Teen Night with free pizza and an open mic for youths 11 to 21 years of age at 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 26, at the church.

— The fifth annual Nativities and Noels, a free event that features about 600 nativities from around the world and continuous live vocal and instrumental Christmas music, will be Friday, Dec. 2, through Sunday, Dec. 4, at the Topeka Stake Center of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 2401 S.W. Kingsrow Road. The event will run from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and 3 to 7 p.m. on Sunday. Refreshments will be served throughout the event.

The nativities are on loan from local Latter-day Saints and friends of other faiths, and a very wide variety will be on display: traditional, ornaments, miniature, homemade, electric, musical, children’s, and international.

More than 70 countries will be represented in the display. Creches will range in size from under an inch to several feet tall and will reflect a wide variety of materials: porcelain, wood, clay, metal, and cloth, but also paper, marbles, corn husks, coconut shells, gourds, and recycled pop cans, steel drums, and auto parts.

A “seek-and-find” sheet (similar in concept to “Where’s Waldo?”!) will be given to interested display visitors.

Additional Christmas activities are planned throughout the day on Saturday: a nativity photo booth, nativity crafts for children, a reading room of Christmas books, a Christmas story teller, and videos about Christ’s birth.

A Christmas music program for people of all ages will be presented at 7 p.m. on Saturday.

Following the close of Nativities and Noels at 7 p.m. on Sunday, a live broadcast of a Christmas Devotional from Salt Lake City will be shown. The devotional will feature music by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and a Christmas message from one of the worldwide leaders of the LDS Church.

— Crestview United Methodist Church, 2245 S.W. Eveningside Drive, will have a holiday bazaar and luncheon from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 3. The event will include crafts and baked goods for sale; a silent auction with theme baskets; and a chili or soup lunch served with a sandwich for $7 per meal from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Cookies and candy will be available for $7 per pound.

— St. John African Methodist Episcopal Church, 701 S.W. Topeka Blvd., will have its annual Holiday Market from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 3. A large selection of vendors will have items available in the lower level of the church. A home-cooked lunch also will be available. The event also will feature drawings for door prizes.
