A psychiatrist will be asked to examine a  city man who stabbed a woman in her home — leading her young daughter to become an unlikely hero.

Nurdin Allaudin Dossa, 68, appeared briefly Monday in Calgary provincial court, where Crown and defence lawyers ask that his case be adjourned for two days.

“My friend and I are requesting an adjournment so he can see the doctor on Wednesday,” duty counsel Mark Cluett told judge Marlene Graham, of a joint submission by himself and Crown prosecutor Achilles Grobler.

At that time a psychiatrist will speak to Dossa to determine if there are grounds to seek a 30-day assessment to see if the accused is unfit to stand trial.

Dossa is charged with aggravated assault in connection with the stabbing of Anila Malik last Thursday.

The attack on Malik could have been worse if not for the quick actions of her daughter, Sonia Yousaf.

The 10-year-old raced from the family’s northeast Calgary home to a neighbour’s to summon emergency personnel as her mother was being assaulted.

Police said the girl’s conduct saved her mother’s life.

Around 4:30 p.m., the girl rushed from her home in the 100 block of Coral Springs Close N.E. to a neighbour’s house, where police were called for help.

Officers arrived on the scene to find a severely injured woman and a man attacking her with a knife.

To  be unfit to stand trial, Dossa would have to be unable to instruct counsel, or understand the allegations against him.
