Ailing Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, who suffered cardiac arrest on Sunday, has been subjected to countless rumours and speculation since she was admitted to Chennai's Apollo Hospitals for treatment of fever and dehydration on September 22.

Even fake pictures of Jayalalithaa were posted through social media to create panic among the general public in the state.

Worried by alarming rumours about her real condition inside the critical care unit at the hospital, the Tamil Nadu government put out two press releases and Apollo Hospitals released a health bulletin to indicate all is well in 'Amma Nadu'.

AIADMK spokespersons also declared that she is doing fine, deploring the panic that Whatsapp message forwards were spreading.

Gossip mills were abuzz with the following rumours after the 68-year-old leader was admitted to the hospital:

- Section 144 was imposed in Tamil Nadu keeping in view Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa's deteriorating health condition.

- All schools and colleges in Chennai will remain closed on Monday. Later, Tamil Nadu Education Minister K Pandiya Rajan denied the rumours.

- Armed forces called outside Jayalalithaa’s Poes Garden residence.

- An FIR was filed against social media user Tamizachi for saying RSS killed Jayalalithaa. Tamizachi wrote on her Facebook wall on September 30 that she had received information from reliable sources that Jayalalithaa died two days ago.

- Jayalalithaa's left thumb impression, which was affixed on poll papers to nominate candidates, was false. Social activist K R 'Traffic' Ramaswamy filed a petition in the chief judicial magistrate court at Egmore seeking a probe by the fingerprint division of state crime record bureau into the nomination of candidates by Jayalalithaa.

- In their last update on September 30, doctors had dismissed rumours that Jayalalithaa was so ill that she had to be taken abroad for treatment.

- An astrologer said that the Jayalalithaa's health was affected because of the position of Jupiter. Astrologer Sivalpuri Singaram predicted that Jayalalithaa's health to improve after October 10. He said that till then, Jupiter is in a position that is likely to trouble her health slightly.

- A purported video of the Apollo Hospital was leaked on the social media. The content of the video indicated that Jayalalithaa was in critical condition.
