Distressed over crop failure, a 55-year-old farmer allegedly committed suicide by hanging in his house at Kattumannarkovil in the district on Saturday.

Police sources said Sundarakannu of Chavadi village near Pillayarthangal in Kattumannarkovil block in the district had raised pulses on two acres of land he had taken on lease from another farmer.

He had also borrowed money from locals for farming. However, crops were washed away in the rain that had lashed the district over the last few days.

Sundarakannu committed suicide. His son, Selvam, informed the Kumaratchi police who sent the body for post-mortem to the Chidambaram GH. Further investigations are on.

The state health helpline is 104 and Sneha's suicide prevention helpline is 0 44-2464 0050 .
