SXSW Announces Film Lineup

125 films. 85 world premieres. 11 North American first time looks, and 51 feature debuts. The SXSW Film roster has arrived, with big features like Edgar Wright's Baby Driver, the debut of Starz's American Gods adaptation, and documentaries on subjects from the Grateful Dead to Black Lives Matter.

The film fest, running March 10-19, just released the nearly full lineup (sorry, horror fans and those with short attention spans, you have to wait another week for the Midnighters and shorts lists). The Headliners category drops three big additions, with a few more promised to come. Wright's eagerly awaited crime drama gets its world premiere, while his fellow Englishman Ben Wheatley returns to SX for the first time since 2011's Kill List with the U.S. premiere of his madcap action comedy Free Fire. Filling out the trio is yet another Brit, Michael Winterbottom, who brings his music doc about Wolf Alice, On the Road, for its North American debut.

As always, there's a strong showing from local Austinites. Sandra Adair is best known as Richard Linklater's longtime editor, but she finally makes her directorial debut with Austin-set documentary The Secret Life of Lance Letscher, chronicling the work and career of the South Congress-based sculptor and collage artist.

She's joined on the roster by two more familiar faces: directing duo Julia Halperin and Jason Cortlund, who bring their follow-up to Now, Forager, the Austin-set music drama La Barracuda.

Filling out the locals list, Bob Byington (Somebody Up There Likes Me) directs Infinity Baby (scripted by rising NY-based indie talent Onur Tukel), while Austin transplant Macon Blair, fresh off the Sundance success of his directorial debut I Don't Feel at Home in This World Anymore, penned black comedy Small Crimes. Fellow transplant and writer Philipp Meyer also gets screen time, with AMC bringing the first episode of their adaptation of his multi-generational Texas epic The Son to town.

On the acting side, screen regulars Jonny Mars and Sam Eidson appear in A Bad Idea Gone Wrong, the Ft. Worth-shot relationship feature from Jason Headley. Plus SXSW had already confirmed the world premiere of Terrence Malick's Song to Song, which will include pretty much everyone who has been to an Austin music festival somewhere in the background.

And that's all just scratching the surface. The documentary strand stretches from behind-the-scenes stories of the Muppets to the future of porn, and the death of Michael Brown, plus the 24 Beats Per Second and Global programming, and an Alien retrospective. Plus with a chance to catch some festival faves from other film gatherings, like the upcoming kaiju comedy and Fantastic Fest smash Colossal and super-dark Croatian comedy Goran, it's going to be a busy 10 days.
