Katelyn Emerson
St. Paul’s Artist Series presents virtuoso organist Katelyn Emerson, 2016 winner of the AGO National Competition, on Friday at 7:30 p.m. Her program traverses the 18th, 19th and 20th century organ repertoire, including works by German composers Buxtehude, Bach, Mozart, and Schumann; and French composers Boëly, Duruflé, Tournemire, Langlais, and Widor.
The concert takes place at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 305 W. 7th St. at Pine. Tickets are $20; $15 seniors; and $10 students. For tickets, visit the St. Paul’s website: stpaulschatt.org/concert-series/.
Keith Reas, organist and music director at St. Paul’s, said, “We are very pleased to present Katelyn Emerson, an up-and-coming young organist who won the 2016 American Guild of Organists National Young Artists Competition, the most prestigious organ competition in the US. A graduate of the Oberlin College Conservatory of Music, she has already performed concerts throughout North America and Europe, and she is in growing demand as a performer and clinician.
"Katelyn’s program will showcase both her talent and the many colors of St. Paul’s Casavant organ, the largest in Chattanooga. Beginning with North German masters Bach and his mentor Buxtehude, she will highlight German/Austrian organ music of the 18th and 19th centuries with works by Mozart (originally written for a mechanical clock organ) and Schumann (originally written for pedal piano). The second half of the program is ideally suited to the French colors of the Casavant (reeds and overtones), including virtuosic works from the 19th and 20th centuries by the great organ masters Boëly, Duruflé, Tournemire, Langlais and Widor.”
“In addition to her concert at St. Paul’s, Katelyn Emerson will conduct a master class on the subject, Registering historic organ works on contemporary American organs, at St. Paul’s on Thursday at 6:30. p.m. Sponsored by the Chattanooga Chapter, American Guild of Organists, the workshop is free and open to the public.”
