BJD captures Balasore, Bhadrak Zilla Parishads

Even as the BJP made a clean sweep in Mayurbhanj district, it is still BJD Raj in different ZP zones in the coastal districts of Balasore and Bhadrak, despite a few surprise gains for the Saffron.

BALASORE/KEONJHAR: Even as the BJP made a clean sweep in Mayurbhanj district, it is still ‘BJD Raj’ in different ZP zones in the coastal districts of Balasore and Bhadrak, despite a few surprise gains for the Saffron party.

Reasserting its dominance over the Congress and the BJP, the BJD has bagged 31 seats of the total 45 ZP seats in Balasore. The BJP has bagged 13 seats and the Congress had to be satisfied with only one seat.
The BJP, which had failed to win even a single seat during 2012 polls, was the biggest gainer this time. The Congress lost as many as 11 seats to its rivals. Compared to the previous polls, the BJD lost only two seats despite the impressive performance of the Saffron outfit.

After the result was announced officially, the BJD has emerged as single largest party in the ZP polls heading to capture the ZP on its own. The magic number to form the Zilla Parishad is 23. The BJD has done well in Bhogarai, Basta, Baliapal, Jaleswar, Oupada, Khaira, Soro and Simulia blocks while BJP’s presence was marked in Nilagiri, Sadar, Bahanaga and Remuna blocks.

In Bhadrak district, of 28 seats, the BJD captured 24 zones while the BJP managed to bag only four zones.
The Congress failed to open its account like the previous panchayat elections. The BJD is all set to form the Zilla Parishad here. In 2012, BJD had won 27 seats and BJP one.

This time, the BJP has fared well in Dhamanagar block by capturing all four seats. Dhamanagar is represented by BJD MLA Muktikanta Mandal, who was in trouble last year after the High Court directed him to surrender before a lower court and seek bail in connection with a murder case.

In Mayurbhanj district, the BJP has left the poll pundits surprised and is all set to form the Zilla Parishad.
The Saffron party has captured 49 zones out of 56 in the tribal dominated district. While BJD managed to bag only five seats, the Congress failed to score even one and the JMM has to be satisfied itself with only one seat. Another seat went to an Independent candidate.

In Keonjhar, which has 37 ZP seats, the BJD won in 25 seats. Six seats went to the BJP. Independent candidates won in six seats.

The BJD candidates were defeated in different zones in Champua Assembly segment that went to Independent candidates. Former Pradesh Congress Committee presidents Niranjan Patnaik and Jaydev Jena could not manage a win for party-sponsored candidates in the election.
