BERHAMPUR: After the farmer’s suicide in Bargarh, yet another farmer ended his life over crop loss and loan burden. T Bulu Reddy (33) of Chikarada village under Rangeilunda block in Ganjam district allegedly committed suicide by consuming pesticide.

Reddy had raised vegetables in half an acre of land. He had taken a loan of  `one lakh for cultivation and another `one lakh for treatment of his ailing son from a money lender.

While a portion of the crop was damaged due to lack of water, the rain last week damaged the harvest completely, said T Satyamma, wife of Reddy. She alleged that due to the loans, Reddy was depressed and on March 11, he consumed pesticide.

Though he was admitted to MKCG, he died while undergoing treatment. His son T Santosh is studying in Class VIII while his daughter T Sristi is a Class IX student. Golonthara police registered a case.

Meanwhile, Kanisi Tehsildar Lalatendu Sahu visited the village and recorded the statements of the villagers and Satyamma. He also assured that he will apprise the higher authorities of providing compensation to the bereaved family from the Chief Minister’s relief fund.

On Monday, BJP leaders, led by Bibhuti Jena, met Satyamma and assured financial assistance. On Tuesday, Krushak Sabha leader Jaganath Misra and others visited the village and alleged that Reddy’s  death has exposed the failure of the State Government in dealing  with the problems faced by the farmers. They also demanded adequate compensation to the family of the deceased.
