One person was killed and three people injured Wednesday morning in a crash east of the Sauvie Island Bridge that closed U.S. 30 in both directions for several hours, authorities said.

Five cars were involved in the crash just east of the Sauvie Island Bridge, Oregon State Police spokesman Sgt. Kyle Hove said.

A red Ford Ranger pickup truck driven by Lewis Demars, a 58-year-old from Scappoose, crossed over the centerline from the eastbound lane and went into oncoming westbound traffic, Hove said.

The Ranger struck a Toyota Camry driven by Steven Richards, a 46-year-old from Vancouver, nearly head-on. Then, the Ranger crashed head-on into a utility van driven by 26-year-old Breckon Scott of Camas, Washingoton, Hove said.

The Camry began to spin and hit the side of a Kenworth dump truck driven by Michael Williams, 38, of Portland. The Camry then crossed over the centerline into eastbound oncoming traffic, Hove said. It collided head-on with a Honda Fit, driven by Laurie Davis, a61-year-old from Scappoose.

Demars died at the scene, Hove said. Richards, Davis and Scott were taken to Legacy Emanuel Medical Center with injuries. Williams was not injured.

U.S. 30 was closed for about three hours as police investigated the crash.
