PATNA: Madhepura MP and Jan Adhikar Party-Loktantrik (JAP-L) patron Rajesh Ranjan alias Pappu Yadav was on Monday arrested by Patna police after a high-voltage drama that continued for more than four hours at the parliamentarian’s residence in Mandiri locality of the state capital.
Police said that Pappu was arrested in connection with an old case related to causing nuisance near the state capital’s Kargil Chowk on January 24.
The police decided to arrest the MP, who was expelled from RJD in May 2015, on Monday afternoon when supporters of Pappu Yadav clashed with police during a protest march towards the state assembly earlier in the day. Police said Pappu allegedly provoked his workers to attack the police teams trying to stop the JAP-L workers from proceeding towards the assembly, a prohibited zone, where budget session is underway.
The high-voltage drama to arrest the MP actually began around 5 pm this evening when a 500-strong team of armed police personnel led by the DSP Shibli Nomani reached Yadav’s residence in Mandiri locality of the city. As the MP, surrounded by his hundreds of die-hard supporters, declared that he would not allow police to arrest him without a warrant of arrest, the police personnel besieged his house. In the meantime, Pappu’s supporters kept raising slogans in his favour while policemen kept a watch around his house.
The drama continued till around 9.15pm when another DSP Kailash Prasad reached the MP’s house with an arrest warrant issued in an old case pertaining to creating nuisance around Kargil Chowk. Though Pappu continued his protest, a police officer at the MP house declared that Pappu Yadav has been arrested in an old case.
Earlier in the day, Pappu and his four dozen supporters received injuries after police caned them while they were trying to proceed towards the state assembly to lodge their protest over the recent average 55% hike in power tariff and to demand a CBI probe into the Bihar Staff Selection Commission (BSSC) question paper leak case.
As the police stopped their procession from going towards the assembly, the JAP-L workers turned violent and pelted stones at the police. This led the police to use water cannons to disperse the crowd and when that failed, cops resorted to lathicharge, injuring nearly 50 workers.
Pappu was also injured in the police action. As the action intensified, Pappu left the protest march and reached the office of a local TV channel where he claimed that more than 100 JAP workers were badly beaten up by police. When the police reached the channel office to arrest him, Pappu went to his residence in Mandiri area.
