A father and son were arrested in Colorado Springs Wednesday and police shot the son’s dog in the process.

The incident unfolded at about 4:40 p.m. when police were called to the 1200 block of Alexander Road on a report of domestic violence, according to the department’s crime blotter.

When officers arrived a woman told them the suspect, identified as 27-year-old Joshua Shankland, had threatened her with a knife and wouldn’t let her out of a car.

Police found Shankland in the 2000 block of East Jackson Road. At that point, Shankland’s dog twice lunged at officers, police said, and officers shot the dog. The blotter did not say whether the dog survived.

The suspect’s father, Jeffery Shankland, 48, refused numerous commands by officers during the incident, police said. He was arrested on suspicion of interference.

Joshua Shankland was arrested on suspicion of domestic violence. Police said they found drugs in his possession at the time of the arrest.
