Bypoll results 2017 live: BJP wins 5 seats, Congress wins 2 in Karnataka, 1 in MP

The counting of votes for 10 assembly seats in 8 states and voting in Srinagar Lok Sabha constituency is in progress. Here are the latest updates and results

New Delhi: The counting of votes for 10 assembly constituencies in eight states of Delhi, Karnataka, West Bengal, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Assam and Madhya Pradesh is in progress on Thursday.

Voting was held on Sunday in Rajouri Garden (Delhi), Littipara (Jharkhand), Nanjangud and Gundlupet (Karnataka), Dholpur (Rajasthan), Kanthi Dakshin (West Bengal), Ater and Bandhavgarh (Madhya Pradesh), Bhoranj (Himachal Pradesh) and Dhemaji (Assam).

Here are the latest updates and developments from bypoll results:

7pm: Congress wins in Madhya Pradesh’s Ater assembly seat, with the party’s candidate Hemant Katare winning by over 857 votes against BJP rival Arvind Singh Bhadoria.

Katare secured 59,228 votes, while the BJP candidate managed 58,371 votes. (Election Commission)

6.30pm: Jharkhand Mukti Morcha’s Simon Marandi wins Littipara assembly seat by a margin of 12,900 votes. Marandi secured 65,551 votes, over rival BJP candidate Hemlal Murmu’s 52,651 votes. (Election Commission)

6pm: After 19 rounds of ballot counting in Jharkhand’s Littipara assembly seat, Jharkhand Mukti Morcha’s Simon Marandi leads over BJP’s Hemlal Murmu. Marandi has so far secured 65,551 votes, while BJP candidate has managed 52,651 votes. (Election Commission)

5.45pm: After 19 rounds of ballot counting in Madhya Pradesh’s Ater assembly seat, Congress’ Hemant Katare is leading by over 2,848 votes against BJP rival Arvind Singh Bhadoria. Katare has secured 58,609 votes, while the BJP candidate has managed 55,761 votes. (Election Commission)

5.15pm: Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) chief Sukhbir Singh Badal says the Rajouri Garden result was a “referendum" on the policies of AAP in Delhi and had set the tone for the complete defeat of the party in the forthcoming elections to the Delhi municipal corporation. He also said the most pertinent factor was that AAP candidate Harjit Singh lost his security deposit.

4.30pm: Prime Minister Narendra Modi today hailed the “impressive performance" of the BJP in the assembly by-polls held in various parts of the country. He thanked the people for their “unwavering faith in politics of development and good governance".

“Impressive performance by @BJP4India and NDA in the by- polls in different parts of the country. Congratulations to Karyakartas," Modi tweeted. “I thank the people for the constant support, blessings & unwavering faith in politics of development and good governance," he added in another tweet. 4.15pm: Only 1.68% voters cast their franchise till 2pm at 38 polling stations of Srinagar Lok Sabha constituency with only 576 voters of the total 34,169 cast their votes.

No votes have been polled in Khansahib assembly segment so far, only three votes were cast in Budgam segment and 27 votes in Chrar-e-Sharief segment, the officials said.

They said Beerwah segment recorded 293 votes and Chadoora saw 253 people cast their votes during the corresponding period.

Barring a stone pelting incident at Soibagh area in Budgam district, the situation in the poll bound areas has been peaceful so far, the officials said. Miscreants pelted stones at polling station at Soibagh but they were chased away by the security forces, they said.

There was an altercation between opposition National Congress and ruling PDP workers at Badran in Beerwah area over allegations of bogus voting, the officials said, adding that the issue was later resolved with the intervention of the polling staff and security personnel posted on duty there. 4pm: After 16 rounds of ballot counting in Jharkhand’s Littipara assembly seat, Jharkhand Mukti Morcha’s Simon Marandi leads over BJP’s Hemlal Murmu. Marandi has secured 53,006 votes, while BJP candidate has managed 45,681 votes. (Election Commission)

3.45pm: In Madhya Pradesh’s Ater assembly seat, Congress’ Hemant Katare is leading by over 7,500 votes against BJP rival Arvind Singh Bhadoria after 15 rounds of ballot counting. (Election Commission)

3.30pm: BJP candidate Shobha Rani Kushwah wins Rajasthan’s Dholpur assembly bypoll, defeating Congress’s Banwari Lal Sharma by around 39,000 votes. (PTI)

3pm: TMC’s Chandrima Bhattacharyaa won West Bengal’s Kanthi Dakshin assembly seat by a margin of 42,526 votes. The TMC candidate secured 95,369 votes against the nearest BJP rival Sourindra Mohan Jana’s 52,843 votes. (Election Commission)

2.30pm: BJP’s Shobha Rani Kushavah has secured an unassailable lead over Congress’ Banwari Lal Sharma in Rajthan’s Dholpur legislative assembly seat. The BJP candidate has secured 91,548 votes in the 20th round of ballot counting, while Sharma has managed 52, 875 votes. (Election Commission)

2pm: The ruling Congress retained its hold over Karnataka, winning Nanjangud and Gundlupet assembly seats.

Congress’ Kalale N Keshavamurthy defeated his nearest rival V Srinivas Prasad (BJP) by over 21,000 votes in Nanjangud.

In Gundlupet, Geetha Mahadevaprasad (Cong) trounced BJP’s C S Niranjan Kumar by over 10,000 votes, an election official said. Both the seats were held by Congress.

With the Assembly polls slated to be held in about a year, Congress and BJP had played for heavy stakes in the by-polls.

The by-elections were necessitated in Gundulpet following the death of Cooperation Minister Mahadevaprasad and in Nanjangud, it was caused by the resignation of Srinivas Prasad as Congress MLA after he was dropped from the ministry.

Srinivas Prasad had switched over to BJP, while Keshavamurthy had contested the 2013 Assembly polls on a JD(S) ticket. (PTI)

1.45pm: After 11 rounds of ballot counting in Jharkhand’s Littipara assembly seat, Jharkhand Mukti Morcha’s Simon Marandi leads over BJP’s Hemlal Murmu. Marandi has secured 38269 votes, while BJP candidate has managed 29,320 votes. Kistu Soren of Jharkhand Vikas Morcha (Prajatantrik) has secured 3,518. (Election Commission)

1.25pm: BJP candidate Shobha Rani is leading by 22,602 votes after ten rounds of counting in the Dholpur Assembly bypoll in Rajasthan.

“The BJP candidate has secured 47,951 votes while the votes of Congress candidate Banwari Lal Sharma are 25,349," according to the state election commission.

A total of 74,742 votes have been counted in ten rounds and the counting is on amid tight security arrangements.

In the 2013-assembly elections, BSP candidate B L Kushwaha had won the seat by defeating Congress candidate Banwari Lal Sharma by a margin of 9,209 votes. BJP candidate (Abdul Sagir Khan) was in the third position by securing 35,351 votes. (PTI)

1.15pm: Delhi deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia: “There was anger among people after Jarnail went to Punjab. We tried convincing them, but with the results we are realising that people were not convinced and remained upset. We will pull up our socks in the upcoming polls and also try to convince the people of Rajouri Garden. Whatever work was done by Jarnail we will carry it forward," he said.

When asked about the possible impact of the Rajouri Garden bypoll on the MCD election, Sisodia said the BJP too lost several bypolls after its resounding victory in 2014 Lok Sabha polls.

“We will show it in the MCD poll. After winning 282 seats in Lok Sabha, the BJP lost many bypolls. We will win the MCD polls by telling people about the work done by us and we will win it handsomely," he said. (PTI)

12.45pm: BJP retains Bandhavgarh Assembly seat in MP after defeating rival Congress by margin of over 25,000 votes. BJP nominee Shivnarayan Singh defeated Congress’ candidate Savitri Singh from the seat in Umaria district by 25,476 votes, an election official said. (PTI)

12.40pm: BJP candidate Ranoj Pegu won the Dhemaji Assembly by-election in Assam defeating his nearest Congress rival Babul Sonowal by 9,285 votes.

While the BJP candidate polled 75,217 votes, his Congress rival garnered 65,932 votes, the election office said.

The bypoll was necessitated following the election of BJP MLA Pradan Baruah as MP from Lakhimpur Lok Sabha seat.

A total of five candidates were in the fray and the other three candidates are CPI(M)’s Jadu Hazarika, SUCI(C)’s Hem Kanta Miri and Independent Rajkumar Doley.

The BJP had won 60 of 126 Assembly seats and formed the government in partnership with its pre-poll alliance partners last year. (PTI)

Earlier, BJP also won in Himachal Pradesh’ Bhoranj assembly seat, with BJP candidate Anil Dhiman defeating the nearest rival from Congress by 8,290 votes. Dhiman secured 24,434 votes against Congress candidate Parmila Devi’s 16,144 votes. (Election Commission)

11.50am: After 16 rounds of ballot counting in Delhi’s Rajouri Garden assembly constituency, BJP’s Manjinder Singh Sirsa secured 39,476 votes, ahead of his nearest rival Congress’ Meenakshi Chandela who has secured 25,147 votes. AAP’s Harjeet Singh managed to secure 9,855 votes, as per the data available on the EC website.

11.45am: After 12 rounds of ballot counting in West Bengal’s Kanthi Dakshin, Trinamool Congress’ Chandrima Bhattacharya has secured 74,584 ahead of nearest rival BJP’s Sourindra Mohan Jana, who has got 38,316. (EC website)

11.20am: In Madhya Pradesh—after three rounds of ballot counting at Ater in Bhind district, BJP candidate Arvind Singh Bhadoria was leading over his nearest Congress rival Hemant Katare by 1129 votes, according to the EC website.

Likewise, BJP’s Shivnarayan Singh was ahead of his Congress rival Savitri Singh by a comfortable margin of over 17,000 votes at Bandhavgarh after 14 rounds of ballot count.

11.15am: Congress’ Kalale N. Keshavamurthy was leading by over 17,500 votes against former minister V. Srinivas Prasad of BJP in Nanjangud after 12 rounds of counting. In Gundlupet, Congress’ Geeta Mahadeva Prasad was ahead by over 4,800 votes against BJP’s C S Niranjanakumar, as per the data available on the EC website.

11.10am: The voter turnout in the first three hours of repolling in 38 polling stations of Srinagar Lok Saba constituency has been an abysmal 1%.

Only 344 voters of the 34,169 eligible persons cast their votes across all polling stations till 10 AM, officials said in Srinagar.

No votes were polled in Budgam and Khansahib assembly segments while only two votes were polled in Chrar-e-Sharief segment of the Lok Sabha constituency in the corresponding period, they said.

Chadoora, which was worst hit by violence during Sunday’s polling, recorded 200 votes while Beerwah assembly segment saw 142 people turn up to vote, the officials said. (PTI)

11am:  Vote distribution after eight rounds of counting in Rajouri Garden: BJP has secured 19,557 votes, while the Congress with 15,972 votes is in the second spot. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is a distant third with 3,848 votes.

Delhi’s Rajouri Garden seat fell vacant after AAP legislator Jarnail Singh quit to contest against Shiromani Akali Dal chief Parkash Singh Badal in the recently held Punjab assembly elections.

The results for this seat may boost the morale of the winning party ahead of the 23 April Delhi municipal elections.

10.55am: After two rounds of counting, BJP candidate Shobha Rani Kushwaha was leading in the bypoll to Dholpur assembly constituency in Rajasthan by over 4,700 votes.

“The counting began this morning and the BJP candidate is leading by 4,704 votes after two rounds," the state election commission said.

Congress candidate Banwari Lal Sharma was trailing in the initial trend.

The by-election was necessitated following disqualification of BSP MLA B.L. Kushwaha in a murder case and the BJP surprised observers by pitting his wife Shobha Rani as its candidate against Congress veteran Banwari Lal Sharma.

Health minister Kalicharan Saraf said that the people of Dholpur voted for development and the party is going to win the seat. (PTI)

10.45am: The Congress was leading in Ater in Madhya Pradesh’s Bhind district while the BJP was ahead in Bandhavgarh after the first round of counting of votes for the assembly seats, PTI reported.

After the first round, Congress’s Hemant Katere was leading in Ater constituency by a margin of 44 votes against BJP’s Arvind Singh Bhadoria, an election official said.

BJP’s Shivnaryan Singh was ahead in Bandhavgarh against his rival Savitri Singh of Congress with 5,477 votes after the fourth round.

Earlier postal votes were counted. The bypoll in Bandhavgarh seat was necessitated as MLA Gyan Singh was elected to the Lok Sabha in November last year.

In Ater, the bypoll is necessitated following the death of Congress leader Satyadev Katare The by-elections for the two seats were held on 9 April. (PTI)

10.30am: In Srinagar, polling at 38 booths of Srinagar Lok Sabha constituency is also underway after the Election Commission ordered repolling following violence in the 9 April by-election, in which eight people were killed in clashes with security forces in Kashmir.

Till 10am, 1% voting was recorded, according to CNN News18.

The polling began at 7am and will end at 4pm. The counting of the votes for the constituency will take place on 15 April.
