LUCKNOW: Taking cue from Hindus and Sikhs who hold bhandaras and langars on religious occasions, it was for the first time that a church - Central Methodist Church - in Lucknow, organized a bhandara on Easter.
Taking about the initiative, Reverend Herbert Albe, Pastor, Methodist Church, Lalbagh, said, “A section of non-Christians associate Christmas and Easter Sunday with western culture. They think these festivals are about feasting, merry-making and alcohol, but the fact is that remembering God and service to people is of prime importance to us.
Hence, we decided to organize a bhandara and invite people from all religions.”
Sponsored by members of the Church’s social committee, over 6,000 people from all walks of life were served food (poori sabji) at the bhandara. Around 100 church members volunteered to cook and serve.
Some took time off work to support the cause. AK Singh, government contractor, who was there since 11am to make the arrangements, said, “It’s God’s work and I will always be there at the service of God.”
