Five days after he turned 18, a student of a leading private school in South Delhi, allegedly mowed down four people sleeping on a pavement after he lost control of his overspeeding i-20 car on Thursday morning in North Delhi’s Kashmere Gate area.
The victims were taken to a nearby hospital where one of them succumbed to his injuries, while the other three are believed to be in critical condition. The errant driver, who was driving without license, was apprehended at the spot, while his two friends managed to escape following the incident, police said.
DCP (north district) Jatin Narwal said they are identifying the victims. “The incident occurred around 5.40 am when the accused Samar Chugh along with his two friends, appearing in some exam, were heading towards Mathura Road to meet their friends. After the incident, two managed to flee from the spot while driver was apprehended by police,” he added.
Narwal said the errant driver is a resident of Model Town area. “We have sent him for medical examination to confirm alcohol intake,” he added.
Initial investigation has revealed that the car was being driven at a high speed and the driver lost control over the vehicle. “One of the victims was dragged for around 20 meters by the car which then got overturned after jumping over the divider,” a senior police officer said.
Sources said that the car is owned by Chugh’s friend, who was sitting along with him when the incident occurred, and police will book the father of the youth as the car was registered in his name.
