State representative to speak at Topeka church’s men’s program

Rep. K.C. Ohaebosim (D-Wichita) will be the featured speaker at the Men’s Day program at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 23, at St. Mark’s African Methodist Episcopal Church, 801 N.W. Harrison.

Ohaebosim, who received his early education in his parents’ native Nigeria, was graduated from Wichita Heights High School and later from Wichita State University. He received his master’s degree in business administration in May 2005 from Newman University.

Ohaebosim was elected this past November to his first term as a Kansas state representative. He represents House District 89 in the Wichita area.

n The Seeker’s Class at First Christian Church-Disciples of Christ will hold a garage sale from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, April 21, and from 7 a.m. to noon Saturday, April 22, on the east side of the church near S.W. 19th and Stone.

n The men of St. Mark’s African Methodist Episcopal Church, 801 N.W. Harrison, will have an all-you-can eat pancake breakfast from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, April 22. The suggested donation is $7.

n St. Matthew Catholic Church, 2700 S.E. Virginia, will have a plant sale from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, April 22, and from 9 a.m. to noon Sunday, April 23.

n Grantville United Methodist Church, 3724 South St. in Grantville, will have its annual spring dinner and bazaar from 3 to 7 p.m. Saturday, April 22. The bazaar will include crafts, a bake sale and cake walk. The meal will include chicken casserole or pork loin; vegetables; salad, rolls; pies and drinks and will be served from 4 to 7 p.m. for a freewill offering. All proceeds will be used for United Methodist Women Missions.

n Susanna Wesley United Methodist Church, 7433 S.W. 29th, will have its Spring Fling from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday, April 23. Hot dogs, hamburgers and ice cream will be served. The event will include games, arts, crafts, relay races and face-painting. The Topeka High School Jazz Band will perform.

n St. Luke Missionary Baptist Church, 2222 S.E. Madison, will continue the 38th pastor-and-wife anniversary celebration for the Rev. McCoy and Lucinda Caraway at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, April 23. Special guests will be from Topeka Churches Singing Convention. The Rev. David Helm, pastor of Mount Olive Primitive Baptist Church, will be the speaker.

The celebration will climax will be at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, April 30. The special speaker will be the Rev. Vernon DeBose, of New Fellowship Baptist Church in Kansas City, Kan.

n A Divine Mercy Celebration will take place from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, April 23, at Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church, 3601 S.W. 17th. Confessions will be heard from 1 to 2:45 p.m. The service will begin at 3 p.m.

n A Wycliffe Associates banquet will be held at 7 p.m. Monday, April 24, at Western Hills Baptist Church, 2900 S.W. Auburn Road. The guest speaker at the annual event will be Jeewan Rai, of Nepal, a Bible translator for Wycliffe Associates. In addition to his duties with Wycliffe Associates, Rai also serves about 600 youths at his local church, teaching them from the Bible every week. n Randel Ministries, in connection with Harvesters and Family of God Church, will have the first of this year’s mobile food distributions beginning at 9 a.m. Tuesday, April 25, at the church, 1231 N.W. Eugene. No identification or proof of income is required. The distributions are held the fourth Tuesday of the month from April to November. The church’s food pantry will remain open year-round from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday.

n The 59th annual St. John’s Lutheran Church Smorgasbord will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 25, at the church, 901 S.W. Fillmore. The menu will include chicken, ham and barbecue meatballs along with salads, pie, roll and drink. The price is $10 for adults, $4 for Children 6 to 12 and free for children under 6. Proceeds will benefit organizations including the Topeka Rescue Mission, Doorstep, Lutheran Hour Ministries, Children’s Christian Concern Society, the Lutheran Laymen’s League Rose Bowl Parade entry and Topeka Lutheran School.

n Members of 20 Shawnee County churches that make up the Topeka Justice Unity Ministry Project will gather at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 25, at Grace Episcopal Cathedral, 701 S.W. 8th, where they will make presentations on proposals that would: benefit recently released inmates; help find affordable housing for low-income individuals; and develop transportation solutions for area residents who don’t have a car.

n First Lutheran Church, 1234 S.W. Fairlawn, will celebrate its 150th anniversary during the month of April. The church will have an open house from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday, April 29. Light snacks will be provided, and displays of church memorabilia will be displayed. A festival worship service will take place at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, April 30, with guest preacher Bishop Roger Gustafson of the Central States Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. n Temple Beth Sholom, 4200 S.W. Munson, will have its 52nd annual Blintze Brunch and Jewish Food Fair from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Sunday, April 30.

Food items will include blintzes, rolled cabbage, lox spread and bagels, meat knishes and kosher hot dogs, as well as kugel.

In addition to food offerings, the event will feature performances of Israeli music and dancing, a bake sale and a gift shop with Judaica items. Temple hosts also will be available to explain Jewish symbols, faith and culture. A drawing for a $750 gift certificate from Briman’s Leading Jewelers also will be held, with a $1-per-chance donation appreciated. Other prizes will be offered through a silent auction.

The brunch was selected as the Best Ethnic Event in Northeast Kansas in The Topeka Capital-Journal’s “Best of Topeka” feature in 2016.

n Faith Temple Church, 1162 S.W. Lincoln, will have Friends Unity Day at 11 a.m. Sunday, April 30. Attendees are invited to wear white shirts to the event. Dinner will follow the service.

n Mormon Tabernacle organist Richard Elliott will be in concert at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 30, at Grace Episcopal Cathedral, 701 S.W. 8th. The concert is sponsored in part by the Topeka and Kansas City chapters of the American Guild of Organists. Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for students and free for children 12 and younger. n The annual State of Kansas Holocaust Commemoration Service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, May 1, at the Ramada Hotel and Convention Center, 420 S.E. 6th. The program theme is “The Power of Memory to Shape Our Future.”

The program will feature remembrances of Herbert Moses, a Holocaust survivor, in his own recorded words and through the perspective of his family.

Gov. Sam Brownback will make a Holocaust proclamation, and Holocaust survivors, World War II veterans and children of survivors will be honored.

Additional participation will come from Kansas clergy, political leaders and students.

n The 66th annual National Day of Prayer will take place at noon Thursday, May 4, in the Statehouse rotunda, 300 S.W. 10th. Another service will be held later that day from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Avondale East NetReach Center, 455 S.E. Golf Park.

Youth choirs will furnish the music on Saturday night and adult choirs will sing on Sunday afternoon, when Elder David Helm will preach.

n The Saturday Women’s Connection will have a “Girls Love to Shop” luncheon from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, May 13, at the Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library, 1515 S.W. 10th.
