Vijayapura sizzles at 42.5 degree Celsius

Last Updated 22 April 2017, 19:58 IST

The city recorded its highest maximum temperature for April in recent years, at 42.5°C, on Saturday.

It was the hottest summer day in recent years. The maximum temperature in the summer has hovered around 42°C in the district in the last few years. People are neither able to stay indoors nor come out of their houses after 9 am. The ground - heated by sun rays during day time - gives out the heat at nightfall. Residents are able to catch some sleep in the early hours. Weather experts say the city has become a heat island, with the temperature 1 or 2°C more than the outskirts.

H Venkatesh, head of the weather centre of the agriculture university at Hitnalli on the city outskirts, said the district had recorded 43°C on May 12 and 19 in 2010. The temperatures were between 40°C and 41°C in March 1996 and March 2004. They were between 40°C and 42°C in March and April this year, Venkatesh said.
