Ghanshyam Lodhi in his complaint to the police had alleged that his cow was hit by a bullet fired by his neighbours in Ashok Nagar on May 5. Gau Rakshak activists and Lodhi protested outside the Piprai police station and demanded action against the neighbours who denied hitting the cow. The scene shifted to Bhopal as the cow was brought to a veterinary doctor for examination. The vet after examining the cow and conducting an X ray ruled out a bullet injury and said that the cow had been hit by some blunt object.

"The cow had come to us on May 5. It was being alleged that she had been hit by a bullet but during our examination we found out that the cow had been hit by a blunt object and there were no traces of any bullet injury. The cow is still with us and we are taking care of," veterinary doctor PS Patel, who operated on the cow, said.

Ghanshyam Lodhi, however, could not digest the report given by the vet and committed suicide by hanging himself from a tree inside the state animals hospital in Bhopal.

"This man had come to get his cow treated in Bhopal from Ashok Nagar. We had registered a case and got a post mortem done. The post mortem report pointed towards death due to hanging but the case diary has been transferred to Ashok Nagar as an abetment to suicide, case has been registered in Ashok Nagar," additional SP Bhopal, Rajesh Chandel said.

Ghanshyam Lodhi's body was taken to Ashok Nagar on May 8 but his relatives refused to cremate him alleging that he had been forcefully hanged by those against whom he had lodged a complaint for hitting his cow. The cremation was done only after the district SP line attached the station house officer of Piprai police station Sanjay Rai and four others for dereliction of duty and registered an abetment to suicide against six persons against whom the dead man had lodged a complaint for attacking his cow.

While the cow is being treated in Bhopal, police force has been deployed in Silawan village in Ashok Nagar as Gau Rakshaks attempted to give a communal twist to the incident.
