Rush-hour demonstrators protest Trump

Amy Britain with about a dozen others demonstrate along Civic Center Drive NW and 11th Ave. NW Friday afternoon May 12, 2017 during rush hour.

About 20 demonstrators holding anti-President Donald Trump signs stationed themselves along Civic Center Drive near HyVee Barlow during Friday afternoon's rush hour.

They were greeted by occasional honks of support and thumbs up from drivers.

"They're helpful," Sara Hocker, one of the organizers of the demonstration, said of the honking horns. "You can make the argument that being out here is a waste of time. But we want to keep what's happening every day in the Trump administration from appearing normal."

"As long as this is going on, we're going to be out here," said Amy Britain, another organizer.

The protest was put together after Trump earlier this week fired FBI Director James Comey, Hocker said.

"What we want is the truth," she said.

She, and others interviewed, said they are troubled not only by the firing of Comey in the middle of an investigation of the Trump campaign's alleged contacts with Russia, but by what they see as lies and half-truths coming from the White House. "I think he will be impeached," Britain said.

"I have faith in our democracy," said Monty Flinsch, who held a sign reading "What the Trump?" "This is a real threat, but we're stronger than this. I believe in the American experiment."

The same group plans to demonstrate at 10:30 a.m. today near the downtown Rochester Farmers Market.
