Conservative and Labour candidates standing for the Crewe and Nantwich parliamentary seat have set their differences aside today to pay their respects to those killed and injured in the terrorist attack in Manchester.

All political parties have said there will be no campaigning today for next month's General Election as a mark of respect to those affected by last night's explosion at the Manchester Arena which killed 22 people and injured another 59.

This morning Conservative candidate Edward Timpson said: "My thoughts and prayers go out to the families and victims who have been affected by this horrific attack in Manchester, and I know local people will share that sentiment.

"Many of us attend concerts and other events at the MEN Arena, and there were doubtless families from Crewe and Nantwich there.

"I have suspended my general election campaign, and my office is open as usual should anyone require assistance.

"The Greater Manchester Police website is being updated regularly with the latest information and contact numbers."

Labour candidate Laura Smith issued a statement on Facebook to pay tribute to those affected.

Ms Smith said: "Today the country is united in grief for those who lost their lives in last night's appalling events.

"Our thoughts will also be with those who have suffered injury or trauma, as well as the families, friends and loved ones of everyone affected.

"I would like to pay tribute to the incredible people of Manchester who opened their doors and offered shelter, and our brave emergency services who have done an excellent job as always in the most difficult circumstances imaginable.

"Those that seek to divide us with fear and hatred will not succeed. We will respond by coming together with love, support and solidarity."

Greater Manchester Police has appealed for anyone who has images or footage from Manchester Arena last night to upload them to UKpoliceimageappeal.co.uk or Ukpoliceimageappeal.com to help with the investigation.

Emergency numbers have been set up for anyone who is concerned for loved ones who may not have returned home. These numbers are 0161 856 9400 or 0161 8569900.

Police are also urging people to be vigilant and to report any suspicious activity on the Anti-Terrorist hotline number 0800 789321 or by dialling 999.
