Girl on way to give birthday sweets dies in Kancheepuram road mishap

A girl’s birthday and life ended in a flash on Sunday afternoon when a van ran over her and killed her in Kancheepuram.

CHENNAI: A girl’s birthday and life ended in a flash on Sunday afternoon when a van ran over her and killed her in Kancheepuram. Police said the child, Priyadarashini (7), of Kamaraj Nagar had just celebrated her birthday with her family at home and was on her way to distribute sweets to relatives when the accident happened.

Priyadarshini was riding pillion on the scooter along with her 3-year-old brother. It was driven by her mother R Kavitha (32), Sivakanchi police told Express and added, “They were going to distribute sweets around 11 am. When she came to the local fish market near Kammavaar Street, Kavitha lost balance and fell on the road. While Kavitha and her son fell on the left side of the road, Priyadarshini fell on the other side. A private milk van coming behind ran over her head, killing her on the spot.”
Kavitha was not wearing a helmet but she and her son escaped with minor injuries. Local police arrested the van driver, M Alagar from Pallavaram.

In another accident, a barber was killed in an accident. A Sathish (27) of Pookkadai Chathiram was travelling to his shop on Sunday. As he was crossing SN Odai, police said a dog suddenly crossed the road. “Sathish was startled and turned the bike to avoid hitting the dog. It was then that he hit a Government bus and lost control. He fell on the road and was run over by the rear wheel of the bus. He died on the spot,” police said.
Based on a complaint, the Siva Kanchi police arrested the Government bus driver, A Yasin Mohideen (55) of Paranthur.
