Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Sunday launched a 24x7 drinking water scheme for Gadag-Betageri City Municipal Council, which has been facing acute drinking water crisis.
Under the scheme, drinking water would be supplied to 21 wards of the twin cities from Singatalur barrage built across the Tungabhadra river.
A sum of ₹127.29 crore had been spent on the project, including on laying 70 km pipeline and construction of a 42 MLD capacity water treatment plant at Papanashi, 10 km from Gadag town.
Over 18,000 households in twin city would benefit from the first phase of the project. Mr. Siddaramaiah was accompanied by RDPR Minister H.K. patil and Municipal Administration Minister Eshwar Khandre.
Mr. Patil said that water supply to all 1.80 lakh residents of the twin city (35 wards) would be provided in another 3-4 months.
About 1.1 tmcft of water is available at Singatalur barrage for drinking purpose. On the eve World Environment Day tomorrow, Mr. Siddaramaiah also poured water to a few translocated trees in the town.
