MADHUBANI: Police investigation into the murder of 12-year-old Nancy Jha of Mahadeomath village under Andhramath police station area points towards revenge angle as her father was opposed to the marriage of his niece with the maternal uncle of the deceased, sources in the special investigating team (SIT) said.
The girl went missing on May 25 while returning home after attending her cousin’s mehndi ceremony. The victim’s house is around 250 metres away from her cousin’s.
Nancy’s mother did not attend the function and her father had gone to Nirmali to take part in a ritual related to the marriage. When Nancy did not return home till late in the night, her father, who runs a school, lodged a case with the local police station.
Later, police on May 27 recovered Nancy’s body from a secluded place near the village. On May 28, two co-villagers Pawan Jha and Laloo Jha were arrested as the villagers had seen the two brothers near the place the girl from where the girl was kidnapped on a two-wheeler.
“We suspect the girl was killed out of revenge as her cousin’s marriage took place on May 26 at Nirmali, and not from her own village from where it was supposed to. The villagers says her cousin had an affair with Nancy’s maternal uncle, but the father of the deceased was opposed to their marriage,” said a police source, adding that the family of Nancy’s cousin was in favour of the marriage.
A police source said the victim’s cousin, who worked in her uncle’s school, developed intimacy with Nancy’s maternal uncle, who also happened to be a teacher there. “We suspect the victim’s cousin and her lover or one of them must have hatched a conspiracy and killed the girl. She was strangulated and not raped and murdered. This has come out even in the postmortem report,” said the source.
Madhubani SP Dipak Barnwal told this correspondent on Sunday that police were investigating the case from all angles, including the suspected love affair of her cousin. “We are investigating the possibility of revenge killing,” he said.
