Three naxals surrender in Chikkamagaluru

Three naxals, including a couple, surrendered before the District Committee on Naxal Rehabilitation here on Monday.

CHIKKAMAGALURU: Three naxals, including a couple, surrendered before the District Committee on Naxal Rehabilitation here on Monday.They are Kanyakumari (30), her husband Shivu (31) and Chennamma(32). 

Kanayakumari is a native of Mugekhan in Kalasa hobli of Mudigere taluk, Chennamma hails from Hammige village of Mundaragi taluk in Gadag and Shivu is from Bannerghatta in Bengaluru.
The number of naxals who surrendered since 2004 has risen to 10.

SP K Annamalai said 33 cases were booked against Kanyakumari under Unlawful Activities Prevention Act in Chikkamagaluru, Udupi and Shivamogga districts.She was allegedly involved in an attempt to murder, riots, a murder and dacoity cases from 2008 to 2009. She was also accused of possessing explosives and had been absconding from 2010. 

Annamalai said Shivu married Kanyakumari on February 25, 2016 and they have a six-month-old child.  Shivu is only a sympathiser while Chennamma is acquitted in all the three court cases she faced. The two are free but Kanyakumari will be in judicial custody, the SP said. Andhra police had come to the city on Sunday to arrest Kanyakumari.

Chennamma, another woman who surrendered on Monday, said she was encouraged by the surrender of other naxals to join the mainstream. “I joined the ‘Tunga Ulisi’ campaign and was arrested by Kundapura’s hankaranarayana police in 2007. Encouraged by the surrender of naxals, I approached the Naxal Rehabilitation Committee,” she said.
