KOLKATA: Setting an example Shampa Daripa, MLA from West Bengal's Bankura district, took a commendable step to prevent illegal sand mining in the state.
On Wednesday, Daripa received information that illegal sand mining was going on along the banks of Darakeswar river at the Rangamati village in her constituency.
"As soon as Daripa was informed about the sand mafia, she hurried to the location along with few officials," a senior West Bengal government official said.

The official also said that the legislature didn't even inform the police.
"On reaching the spot, she screamed and tried to catch the sand miners who were loading trucks. But unfortunately, they managed to flee from the spot leaving their vehicles behind," the official said.
Later, police too were called in.
"It was really a courageous and commendable step of the MLA. She should have informed us in view of the security concerns," a senior police official said, adding, "We have seized four trucks and a motorbike from the Darakeswar river bank."

Meanwhile, Daripa also directed the police to take stern action to stop illegal mining in the state.
"Despite chief minister Mamata Banerjee's order and series of instructions to the police and administration, the illegal business was still going on smoothly," she said.
On February 17, Daripa, who was elected as MLA on Congress ticket, joined TMC in a low affair ceremony.
