Deputies: Alcohol a factor in two Collier wrecks Sunday

Alcohol played a role in two crashes over the weekend, deputies say.

Thad Lewis, 67, of East Naples, was driving a Nissan sedan shortly before 6 p.m. Sunday when he ran a red light, entered an intersection and T-boned another driver on U.S. 41 East, Collier County Sheriff's deputies said in an arrest report. After hitting the victim's Chevrolet, Lewis tried to flee the scene but was stopped at a traffic light by pursuing deputies, the report said.

Deputies said in the report that they concluded Lewis was drunk and unable to give a coherent description of the events.

Both drivers were transported to NCH Baker h Hospital Downtown . The victim, a 35-year-old Naples woman, suffered three broken ribs as a result of the collision, while Lewis was not injured.

Lewis was charged with DUI-having a blood-alcohol level of 0.l5 or higher, DUI-causing property damage and hit-and-run.

Deputies said another crash that resulted in DUI charges occurred at 10 p.m. Sunday. Robin Lee Deal, 42, of Verona Walk in Collier County was driving an Audi SUV when she rear-ended a Chevrolet Impala near Collier Boulevard and Pine Ridge Road, the report said. The impact caused the Impala to hit the back of a Ford Mustang, the report said. 

According to deputies, Deal was confused about her location and noticeably impaired after the collision. Deal told them she had been returning from a convention and still believed herself to be in West Palm Beach, the report said.

Deal faces one charge of DUI-second offense and two counts of DUI-causing property damage.
