Taoiseach Leo Varadkar to speak with Donald Trump for the first time today

The call, due to take place at 4.15pm Irish time, will be the leaders' first interaction.

Earlier this year, the new Fine Gael leader said he was against the idea of inviting Donald Trump to Ireland.

After Enda Kenny extended the initial invitation, Varadkar said that he wasn't sure "what purpose it would serve".

He added that during Barack Obama's visit here in 2011, tens of thousands of people crammed into College Green to cheer him.

"You wouldn't necessarily assume that's the kind of visit it would be", he commented.

Mr Varadkar confirmed recently in the Dáil that he was not planning to rescind the invitation extended by his predecessor as it would be "totally inappropriate".

But he said he would will raise concerns about human rights and LGBT issues with Mr Trump and confirmed that he strongly opposed Trump's decision to withdraw from the Paris Accord climate agreement.

Trump is also due to speak with French President Emmanuel Macron today.
