Four members from three generations of the same family were killed and two others injured when a fire broke out at their residence in Seemapuri, New Delhi, on Friday.

The deceased include a 63-year-old man, his son and two grandchildren.

The accident happened in Dilshad Colony around 3AM. Prima facie, the fire started at the ground floor of the multi-storey building due to a short circuit and then engulfed at least 11 two wheelers before spreading to the higher floors.

The fire was controlled by the fire department after more than an hour of firefighting.

The teams took Vijay Verma (63), his son Sanjay Verma (40), Sanjay's wife Mona and their children Harshu and Chiku and another person to GTB Hospital. Mona is currently being treated while the rest succumbed.

"On preliminary enquiry it was found that the fire broke out due to a short circuit at the electric meter. Scooter/ motorcycles parked at the gallery were also burnt. A case under section 287,304A IPC is being registered," said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Shahadra) Nupur Prasad.
