Four killed, two hurt by lightning in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district

BARIPADA: At least four persons were killed and two women sustained burn injuries due to lightning at two separate places in Mayurbhanj district on Friday.

The incidents took place at Tikarpada under Baripada Sadar police limits and Raghunathganj under Kuliana police limits. The deceased have been identified as Shakuntala Singh (45), Mamata Mohanta (35), Rina Mohanta (27) and Harishchandra Sejpada (70).

Sources said lightning struck Shakuntala, Mamata and Rina when they had taken shelter, along with two others, in a small thatched house near a brick kiln. They had taken their domestic animals to a grazing field there. The injured women, who have been admitted in the district headquarters hospital at Baripada are Laxmimani Singh and Jayanti Singh, both residents of Tikarpada village.

Inspector-in-charge of Baripada Sadar police station Tilottama Rout said three died on the spot while the injured two were rushed to the hospital by the locals in critical condition. “They are under 24-hour observation,” she said. In another mishap, an elderly man died after lightning struck him while he was sitting on the verandah of his house.

All four bodies have been sent for post-mortem examination. As per the relief code of the Odisha government, the kin of each deceased will get Rs 4 lakh. The district administration has also directed the local officials to provide the bereaved families financial assistance under Harishchandra scheme for cremation of the bodies.
