Southwest Florida golf column: Area qualifiers miss cut in tour majors

A trio of Southwest Florida golfers who had qualified for major championships missed the cut Friday.

Jessica Carafiello, who just had her first winter as a teaching professional at Shadow Wood Country Club, shot 77-78/155 and missed the cut by 11 strokes at the KPMG Women's LPGA Championship in Olympia Fields, Illinois.

Carafiello, who spends the rest of the year in Stamford, Connecticut, qualified through the LPGA Teaching & Club Professionals National Championship last year.  It's the second straight year the former Florida Atlantic University golfer made the LPGA Championship.

Naples High grad Kristin Tamulis, a regular on the LPGA Tour who plays out of Grey Oaks, also missed the cut, shooting 77-74/151, and so did Naples' Mo Martin, who had a 146. Martin, also a regular on the tour, plays out of The Club Pelican Bay.

In the U.S. Senior Open in Peabody, Massachusetts, Fort Myers'  Tommy Tolles and  Tommy Stankowski both missed the 36-hole cut after qualifying.

Tolles, who lives in Hendersonville, North Carolina, and is a former PGA Tour player, won his qualifier back on June 12. The 50-year-old missed the cut by a stroke, shooting 71-71/142. Stankowski shot 76-72/148.

Calusa Pines member Jeff Sluman tied for 12th with 68-68-71-70/277, and Jay Haas, another Calusa member, tied for 42nd, shooting 70-70-70-74/284.

Calusa members Loren Roberts (71-72/143) and Rocco Mediate (72-72/144), Bonita Springs' Peter Jacobsen (77-76/153), a former champion, also missed the cut.

2017 Chubb Classic champion Fred Couples tied for fourth, and former champion Kenny Perry won the tournament.

PGA Professional Championship: Andrew Filbert of Bonita National finished 70th in the in Sunriver, Oregon, on June 21. Filbert shot 73-73-71, but stumbled to a final-round 84.
Justin Smith of Bonita Bay West missed the cut for the final round after shooting 76-70-75. Justin McCarraher of Fiddlesticks missed the 36-hole cut, shooting 77-82.

Southwest Florida golf column: Calusa Pines, Naples National ranked among state's best courses

 

Florida State Girls Junior Championship: Kim Egozi of Bonita Springs and Vasy Montague of Naples both made the cut at The Oaks Club in Osprey. Egozi shot 83-80-78/241 and Montague shot 87-75-81/243.

Naples' Eliza Kodak finished second in the 12-and-under, shooting 40-38/78 and Addison Klonowski of Naples was third with scores of 40-42/82.

SFPGA Junior Tour:  Naples' Tommy Amendola finished 12th in the Boca Ration Regional Hospital Junior Championship's Boys 13-18 Division at Broken Sound. Amendola shot 76-82/158.

SFPGA Section; Don Meadows, the director of golf at Quail Valley Golf Club in Vero Beach, was sworn in as the 20th president of the South Florida PGA Section on June 20. He was vice president from 2015-17 and secretary from 2013-15.
