NEW DELHI: Communist Party of India (CPI) has demanded the immediate release from detention of Jignesh Mevani, and former student's union president of JNU, Kanhaiyya Kumar.
Mevani, who spearheaded a Dalit movement in Una, Gujarat, and Kumar, the firebrand Left student leader, were detained by the Gujarat police at Mehsana near Ahmedabad on Wednesday afternoon, when they were about to lead a rally. They were demanding that actual possession of land be given to dalits.
The Gujarat government had earlier handed over land papers to displaced Dalit families in Uma, but failed to hand over actual possession. Several Dalit organisations had come together to demand possession of land for the Dalit families and had formed a United Morcha to organise the struggle.
The CPI alleged that the police, which earlier gave permission for the morcha later withdrew it at the behest of the government. The party's Central secretariat also said that the Dalits' demand for land is justified and should be acceded.
