HYDERABAD: For the second consecutive day Tuesday, rains lashed the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad causing inconvenience to people and bringing vehicular movement to halt.
Due to the downpour, trees were uprooted at a few places in the city hindering the free flow of traffic movement. Several roads were reduced to rubble bringing back the haunting memories of last year’s monsoon.

The Southwest monsoon remained active over the twin cities leading to continuous rains during the last two days. All thanks to the well-marked low-pressure area over Northwest Bay of Bengal off the Odisha coast, which induced a depression. The city is expected to witness more spells on Wednesday. So far the city has recorded 115 mm of rain against the normal average rain of 179-180 mm. With more rains in offing, city is expected to surpass its monthly record.

Vehicles moved at a snail’s pace in Punjagutta, Khairatabad, Mehdipatnam, Masab Tank, Malakpet, Saroornagar, Basheerbagh, Himayatnagar, Nampally, M J Market, Ameerpet, SR Nagar, Erragadda, Uppal, Paradise, Patny, L B Nagar, Tarnaka, Secunderabad, Moosapet and several main roads in Old City. With heavy inflows, water level at Hussainsagar reached 513.10 feet mark against the Full Tank Level of 513.41 feet.

Meanwhile, GHMC has opened emergency help desk to attend complaints of water-logging and uprooting of trees. GHMC commissioner B Janardhan Reddy and Chief City Planner Devender Reddy held a teleconference with officials and instructed them to maintain constant vigil as rains are likely to continue over next few days.

Meanwhile, residents across various parts of the city complained of waterlogged roads. Residents of Yakutpura complained of a few minor accidents near the Road Under Bridge. However, Srinivas Reddy, Zonal Officer, GHMC, South Zone, when contacted, said, “Everything is functioning smoothly, no waterlogging has been found and no accidents have been reported.”

An Old City resident Syed Mohsin who frequently pays visit to Osmania Hospital in Afzal Gunj to provide aid to poor patients said, “Patients have been complaining of power cuts for long hours in the hospital.” However, DCP South Zone B Satyanarayana said there is 100 per cent power supply in Old City.
