VIJAYAWADA: Rain lashed several parts of Vijayawada city and Krishna district on Tuesday, flooding low lying areas and uprooting several trees. The city received a total rainfall of 4.5 cm on average till 9pm on Tuesday while the district received 2552.8 mm rainfall, leaving many areas and underpasses inundated and keeping the civic body workers on their toes on Tuesday morning.


In several places, commuters faced difficulty due to road digging taken up by various government agencies. They had a tough time negotiating potholes and avoiding slush. Several roads in the city were inundated with rainwater, creating traffic chaos. Only by evening did traffic normalise after the rainwater receded.  A compound wall of a water tank in Kedarswerapet in the city collapsed. No casualties have been reported. Officials evacuated people from Gunadala area in the city as a precautionary measure fearing rockslide. Fire and Rescue Service Department reported that there has been no major damage during the incessant rains lashing the city for the last couple of days.

Vijayawada municipal commissioner J Nivas inspected Gangireddula Dibba area on Gunadala hill. Suspecting boulder slides, he instructed officials concerned to shift residents to a nearby government school. He also directed engineering department officials to deploy diesel motors to remove rain water flooding city roads. 

At the other end, Krishna District Collector B Lakshmikantham conducted a review meeting with irrigation, Civil supplies, R &B  and Electricity department officials directing them to be alert as the rains could intensify in the next couple of days. In this regard, he instructed officials to establish control rooms at Collectorate office in Machilipatnam, Vijayawada, Nuzvid and Gudivada. The District Collector also ordered officials to shift people to safe locations from the low-lying areas and cancelled leaves for the officials.
