BENGALURU:
Two men, who snatched chains to raise funds to develop a mobile app, were arrested in Bengaluru today.
The men have been identified as Jabiuddin Tabrez (30), a resident of HBR Layout and Arun Kumar (30), a resident of Mahalakshmi Layout.
Police said, "Both were involved in other cases and were lodged in Central prisons in Parappana Agrahara, where they met. They decided to come up with a mobile application called ‘School app’ which would provide details about schools and colleges so that parents could identify institutions to admit their children. After coming out of jail, they contacted an application developer, who said the project required Rs 2 lakhs."
But the accused did not have sufficient funds to start the project. So, the two came up with the idea of snatching chains. Between March and June 2017, the two succeeded in snatching 29 gold chains in 17 police station limits in the city, the cops said.
Police said both men have a criminal background.
Jabiuddin has 49 cases of robbery and a murder registered against him. Arun Kumar was previously involved in murder and robbery.
Arun Kumar used to change number plates of stolen vehicles. He used to check out the vehicles that were on sale on olx.com, an online classified portal. He then copied the numbers and used the same for the stolen vehicles.
The duo ended their run on Saturday after a special team identified them from a CCTV footage of a chain snatching. Police have recovered 1.2 kg of gold ornaments and a bike worth Rs 35 lakh. The two have been sent to judicial custody.
