The flood toll due in Assam has gone up to 76 with the death of one more person in the Morigaon district on Saturday. According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), the districts of Lakhimpur, Biswanath, Barpeta, Morigaon, Nagaon, Golaghat, Jorhat, Sivasagar and Karimganj are still affected by the flood.
“As of now 58,837 people have been affected by the floods in the nine districts. The number of affected villages stands at 224,” State Project Coordinator of ASDMA Rajib Prakash Baruah told The Hindu on Sunday. He also said that 38 relief camps with 8,294 inmates are currently running in the State. "However, the flood situation in Assam is steadily improving," added Mr. Baruah.
The situation remains grim in Bengal following incessant heavy rains in most parts of the State. Several areas in Paschim Medinipur and Birbhum district have been waterlogged in the heavy downpour since Saturday. The Shilabati river in Paschim Medinipur, the river Dwarka in Murshidabad and the Queay river in the Birbhum district are flowing above the danger level.
Elsewhere, the Godavari river is in spate following heavy rains in Nashik. The district administration has issued an alert for people living in low-lying areas and along the river banks.
Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani conducted an aerial survey over parts of Surendranagar. Extremely heavy rain is expected in the Banskantha, Sabarkantha, Patan and Mehsana districts tomorrow.
Rains in U.P.
Several places in Uttar Pradesh were lashed by rains today, with the State capital recording 6.7 mm of rainfall, the Meteorological Department said. Rain or thundershowers are very likely at most places in the eastern parts of the State, and at isolated places in west U.P.
