SAMBALPUR: In a bid to ease traffic congestion, a 1.3-km long elevated corridor will be constructed on National Highway (NH)-6 at Ainthapali here. The proposed corridor will begin near Modern Bus Terminus at Ainthapali and end near the office of Income Tax.

Informing this, Special Land Acquisition Officer, Sambalpur, Sitansu Tripathy said the district administration had sent a proposal to National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) for the construction of the elevated corridor in October last year.

The NHAI authorities had approved the proposal recently and appointed a consultant to prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR). Soon, they will provide data pertaining to requisite land and structures to be affected besides estimated cost for the project to be executed by the NHAI. The tender for construction of the corridor will be floated after the DPR is prepared, Tripathy said.

The proposed 1.3-km long elevated corridor will ensure smooth vehicular movement on NH-6 connecting Mumbai with Kolkata at the two busy intersections at Ainthapali. About 12 km stretch of the NH passes through the city.

However, the computers witness traffic problem at Ainthapali as there are two crossroads at a distance of about 300 metres. One has to pass through a crossroad on NH-6 to move towards the airstrip and left dyke of Hirakud Dam and another where NH-6 meets Rourkela-Sambalpur State Highway-10. Both the intersections are accident-prone area.
