Restricted free agent forward Ryan Spooner avoided arbitration by signing a one-year contract worth $2.825 million with the Boston Bruins, the team announced Wednesday.

Spooner had been seeking $3.85 million while the Bruins were asking for $2 million. The sides were expected to meet with an arbitrator on Wednesday prior to the deal.

"We are pleased with the process and are happy to have Ryan's contract resolved," Bruins general manager Don Sweeney said. "His agent, Murray Kuntz, and Ryan were both very professional, and our group was well prepared as they had worked very diligently prior to arriving at a settlement point.

"We know Ryan has the offensive skills to be an impactful player, especially while on the power play. We expect Ryan to continue to take the necessary steps with his development to be an even more complete, two-way player."

Spooner recorded 11 goals and 28 assists in 78 games last season. The 25-year-old Ottawa native had been rumored to be on the trade block during the offseason after twice serving as a healthy scratch in Boston's first-round playoff series versus the Senators.

Spooner collected 32 goals, 85 assists and 57 penalty minutes in 214 career contests since being selected by the Bruins in the second round of the 2010 draft.
