Do YOU treat fat people differently? Overweight woman who 'put on a few stone' claims strangers NICER to her when she was slim – but others say it's all in her head

  • Overweight woman said she was treated differently since putting on weight
  • The Mumsnet user noticed strangers were 'nicer' to her when she was slimmer
  • Some women agreed they were looked down upon because of their size
  • But dozens of others said the woman was being paranoid about the slights

An overweight woman has sparked an online debate after revealing she felt she was treated differently because of her size.

Taking to Mumsnet, the British woman explained she had 'recently put on a few stone' and believed that 'strangers were nicer to her when she was slimmer' - pointing to a recent incident when a woman pushed passed her on the street.

She added that she felt 'less attractive' when she was fatter and that it made her 'look a bit rough'.

While dozens of women agreed they were looked down upon for being overweight, others argued that it was all in the woman's head.

Many shared their own experiences with weight bias. One wrote: 'After I'd put on about a stone [a friend] 'jokingly' told me that I needed to "stop eating all the pies" as she could never be friends with an overweight person.

'I didn't give her the change to dump me, I just removed myself from her life. I was so hurt by that comment.'

Another posted: 'I've recently lost over 30 lb ive also noticed clothes shop assistants certainly seem to approach me more to ask if I need assistance where as previously I was ignored.'

'That, sadly, totally is a thing,' a third added. 'Certain shallow as f*** people treat me differently when I'm at my slimmest.'

However others disagreed with the original poster. One wrote: 'I always thought that if you are fat and unattractive like you say then surely people will treat you much nicer because you are not a "threat".'

Another user reasoned: 'As thin person I can't really say I noticed it, and I certainly don't do it myself, but considering that so many people say they noticed it, I am inclined to believe it is actually happening.'
