CHENNAI: Continuing their losing streak, Madurai Super Giant lost to VB Thiruvallur Veerans by three wickets in the second edition of Tamil Nadu Premier League at ICL Grounds in Tirunelveli on Tuesday.
The city witnessed the perfect match which showed how captains should lead from the front. If KB Arun Karthick (68 n.o) of Super Giant tried his best to put as many runs on board, Veerans’ skipper B Aparajith anchored his side’s chase with a quickfire 72. Earlier, rain had forced the match to be shortened to a 14-overs a-side contest.

Madurai, who won the toss and elected to bat first, posted a mammoth total of 145/3 in 14 overs, thanks to the 112-run partnership between Karthick and Mani Bharathy. The captain hit eight fours and two sixes during his knock. Coming into bat in the third over, Bharathy made a brisk 67 in 36 balls with six fours and five sixes.

After the in-form openers of Veerans, NS Chaturved and S Siddharth were dismissed early, it looked like Madurai might finally open their account. But skipper Aparajith ensured no such thing happened as he made the chase look easy. Along with Hari Nishaanth C, he stitched together a 104-run stand. After Hari’s dismissal, wickets started falling in regular intervals, With the final over to go, Veerans needed 10 runs with three wickets in hand.

With a six and four off the second and third ball of the final over, Kavin R made sure of victory. Karthikeyan R was the best bowler for the losing side, removing Aparajith and Malolan Rangarajan.
Veerans are now placed third with six points, behind Tuti Patriots and Chepauk Super Gillies. Madurai remain bottom.
