Chloe Grace Moretz has spoken out about the problem of fat shaming in the movie industry, revealing she was told she was "too big" when she was just 15-years-old.

Speaking to Variety, the Kick-Ass star says she was left in tears following a conversation with a co-star in a previous movie.

"This guy that was my love interest was like, 'I'd never date you in a real life,' and I was like, 'What?', and he was like, 'Yeah, you're too big for me' - as in my size," says Moretz.

What made it more difficult was that she had to hide her emotions and return to the set to continue acting alongside the actor who had made the comments.

"I had to pick it up and go back on set and pretend he was a love interest, and it was really hard.  It just makes you realise that there are some really bad people out there and for some reason, he felt the need to say that to me. You have to kind of forgive and not forget really, but it was just like, wow. It was jarring. I look back on it and I was 15, which is really, really dark."

Moretz doesn't want to name the actor involved, saying she's speaking out to raise awareness about how some women are treated in Hollywood.

In 2016, she spoke at the Democratic National Convention in support of Hillary Clinton, who she names as one of her role models. Julianne Moore, Jessica Chastain, Reese Witherspoon, Scarlett Johansson and Emma Watson are also people she looks up to for inspiration.

Moretz says she wasn't aware of any inequality in Hollywood when it comes to pay, but adds if you're a female alongside a big male co-star then you're less likely to be listened to, likening it to being sat in the backseat of a car.
