Visakhapatnam cops tame rowdies one selfie at a time

VISAKHAPATNAM: In an innovative way to monitor the whereabouts of history-sheeters in rural areas, the district police have instructed beat constables to click selfies with rowdies in their jurisdiction on a daily basis. The policemen have to keep track of the criminals and report their statuses every night by sending pictures clicked with them to a WhatsApp group headed by a top cop. According to the CM’s dashboard, there are 695 history-sheeters in Visakhapatnam district.  The direction was issued by the superintendent of police (Visakhapatnam rural) Rahul Dev Sharma.

According to sources, out of all the history-sheeters in the district, around 30 per cent are goons, while the rest are ganja smugglers, thieves, etc. Anakapalle, Narsipatnam, Kasimkota, Sabbavaram, Nakkapalle and a few other police station limits have the most number of criminals.

Around 25 to 30 teams, including 10 from Anakapalle and 10 from Narsipatnam, are on duty every night. “The checks are conducted after 11 pm. Before leaving, the Inspector will brief the team about areas to be checked and the number of criminals whose statuses need to be tracked. The next morning, we will see at what time the selfies were posted,” the SP explained.
