DHENKANAL:A 45-year-old woman died after being attacked by an elephant in Dhenkanal district on Wednesday. Locals resorted to road blockade following the incident that led to disruption of vehicular traffic.
The deceased is Uma Gadnayak. She was sleeping when an elephant raided her house and attacked her besides, destroyed two rooms. The woman died on her way to the local hospital.
After her death, locals blocked road at Dihadola square over compensation. Placing the body on the road, they burnt tyres and disrupted vehicular movement. The agitators were pacified after the victim’s family was allotted `10,000 cash and forest officials assured payment of another `2.90 lakh as compensation after submission of inquiry report. Locals alleged that forest officials are not doing enough to prevent elephants from entering human habitations.
