Houston Newsmakers Aug. 20: ADL ramps up in face of heightened racial incidents

Crime Stoppers to launch anti-terrorism program

HOUSTON – In the aftermath of the recent protests and deaths in Charlottesville, Virginia, the national conversation about racism in America has dramatically increased.

So too have the efforts of the Anti-Defamation League in combating hate and bigotry locally and nationally.

Dena Marks is the Associate Director of the Southwest Region of the ADL and is a guest on this week’s Houston Newsmakers with Khambrel Marshall.

“Domestic terrorism’ is what some are calling the Charlottesville incident that killed a protestor.

Marks says one of the white supremacist groups in Charlottesville has been on the ADL radar and has committed crimes in the Houston region. She provides this statistic about violence in the United States.

“Of the several hundred extremist-related murders in the U.S. over the past 10 years, 74 percent were committed by right-wing extremists and 24 percent were committed by Islamic extremists.

Only 2 percent were committed by left-wing extremists and Black nationalists -- and none of those were by antifa.”
