Taking cue from Vijayawada, GMC initiates wall-art campaign to make city poster-free

GUNTUR: In a bid to keep the environment clean, the State government has instructed municipalities and corporations to make cities and towns poster-free. The municipal administration officials, who have been entrusted with the responsibility, are monitoring the poster-free programme in 110 municipalities and 14 corporations in the State.  Most of the walls in the cities and towns are defaced with posters, paintings in black and white pertaining to advertisements, campaigns, thereby spoiling their aesthetic look.  The walls of the government buildings are no exception. Hence, the Municipal Commissioners have been instructed to ensure that the cities are poster-free. The approach adopted in Vijayawada, Tirupati, Nellore and Rajahmundry have already yielded results.

Following the guidelines of the municipal administration, the commissioners initiated the programme in 105 municipalities. Only 5 municipalities - Pithapuram, Narasapuram, Mummadivaram, Proddutur and Gudur - are yet to implement the programme. Walls in Guntur city adorn colourful murals, making the city poster free. The Guntur Municipal Corporation (GMC) primarily selected 20 places in the city for colourful wall paintings. NGO Margam painted the walls on the roads with the participation of students belonging to various colleges of the city.

Now the GMC, with the cooperation of Amaravati Art and Cultural Academy, is focussing on wall art to make the walls of the city attractive with abstract sceneries, gardens, flowers and other theme paintings.
The walls of Government General Hospital (GGH), Government Women’s College road, Collectorate road, Railway Station road, Kankaragunta, AC college road and other areas are turning into canvasses with attractive colourful paintings.

GMC Commissioner Ch Anuradha said that civic body is planning to make Guntur a poster-free city hence it has started the wall art campaign.Municipal Administration Director K Kanna Babu said that the corporations and municipalities which initiated the poster-free city programme achieved good results.
