Music fans won’t be hearing ‘Snooker Loopy’ at the Doune the Rabbit Hole Festival – and that’s a promise.

Snooker legend-turned DJ, Steve Davis (59), has assured fans that they won’t have to listen to the Chas and Dave 1986 song when he graces the stage at the festival tonight (Friday).

The six times snooker world champion is just one of the acts scheduled for the three-day festival starting today.

He will take to the stage and will treat fans to a admitted eclectic, if not bizarre mix of music.

Davis has been playing gigs across the country, but is set to make his Scottish DJing debut at the festival.

He said: “I’ve been all over Scotland playing snooker, but this is the first I’ve played any shows here.

“I’m looking forward to it. I’ve played about 35 shows this year and I’ve played big festivals like Glastonbury in the past.

“Sometimes it can be better playing the smaller festivals. You get the music fans and an audience who are musically a little bit more open minded.”

He added: “To describe what sort of music I play is a bit difficult. It’s not easy to point to any one genre. I’ve had some people come up to me before and say ‘you’ve broken my Shazam’.

“I don’t take any of the credit. All the credit goes to the musicians, I just play their records.”

Davis embarked on his new career two years ago and said: “It’s been a bizarre journey. I started out doing a radio show on the local community radio station with a friend.

“We were asked to play a set at the Bloc Weekend, the BBC got involved and did a little documentary on it and from there the phone didn’t stop ringing.

“I had so much fun being a snooker player and now I’ve found something else and it’s happening again.

“I thought my life would be slowing down, but it’s getting even worse playing gigs and having late nights.”

Davis has vowed not to play ‘Snooker Loopy’, a song which poked fun at his World Championship final defeat in 1985 against Dennis Taylor with the line: ‘Steve last year, come very near to winning the snooker crown. But he never got to put it on his ginger nut ‘cos the black ball wouldn’t go down’.

Doune the Rabbit Hole takes place at the Cardross Estate near Lake of Menteith from today until Sunday, August 20.

Appearing alongside Steve will be Songhoy Blues, Liars, Jenny Hval, Roddy Woomble and Start to End (performing Daft Punk’s ‘Discovery’) plus others.

Combining bands from Scotland’s independent/DIY scene alongside international acts, the festival attracts music lovers of all ages.

More international performers will be at the event this year and it also boasts activities including wild swimming, events for youngsters and independent food and drink purveyors.
