BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA — The Space Coast Daily – Friday Night Locker Room team of  Zach Clark and Alan Zlotorzynski opened the 2017 high school football season tonight with live coverage of Cocoa Beach and Holy Trinity on Space Coast Daily TV.

Tonight, it was the Holy Trinity Tigers that cruised to victory in the annual kickoff classic to defeat the Cocoa Beach Minutemen 28-7.

The Cocoa Beach Minutemen were coming off their first winning season since 2012, as they finished 6-5 in 2016, and ended the year with a 55-18 win in the Rusty’s Surf & Turf Bowl over Citi Christian Academy.

David Lowe returns for his third season as the Cocoa Beach head coach, his second stint as the top sideline walker for the Minutemen.

This season, Cocoa Beach will start Steven Walker at quarterback. Walker lines up under center after spending time in the defensive backfield for Cocoa Beach. The Minutemen will rely heavily on the two-way play of Winter Springs transfer, fullback Cole Mitchell, who was a state qualifier in wrestling.

Cocoa Beach also returns several key players on the offensive line including Sebastian Hodge and Tristian West. At wide receiver, the Minutemen return Andrew Hammock, who finished second last season in receiving yards for CCB. The Holy Trinity Tigers are led by Nate Hooks, who enters his fourth season at the Episcopal Academy located off the Pineda Causeway.

The Tigers finished last season with their third straight record of .500 or better under Hooks, as they were 6-3 in 2016. One of the issues Holy Trinity faces is depth, the school does not have a large student body and Hooks’ teams are always thin on numbers. With that said, the Tigers always seem to find ways to win.

Under Hooks, Holy Trinity is 19-12 in three seasons.

The loss of Florida State running back commit Jashaun Corbin to Rockledge was shocking to the Tigers in July but coach Hooks has plan B ready and it is entirely possible that freshman sensation, Keyshawn SpenceHoly Trinity doesn’t miss a beat when they hand off to

Spencer already has three offers, including one from, you guessed it, the Florida State Seminoles.

On the defensive side of the football the Tigers are led by a young man that simply loves to hit and make tackles, he is junior linebacker Sully Altman. As a sophomore Altman earned Florida High School Football’s 3A Defensive MVP and was named first team All-State linebacker.
